Dan has been sidelined for 3-4 weeks after pulling up sore at a training run in Wellington earlier this week. It raises the question just days after his recent sabbatical announcement for 2014... "Will Dan's body hold up enough for him to give RWC 2015 a crack or should he just step aside".
With a number of niggling injuries over the last few seasons, its not the first time that the question has been raised regarding DC's longevity in the test match arena.
After announcing his sabbatical last week, Dan's reason was purely and simply about giving his body a rest, "When you play the game fulltime at this level it does take a toll on your body. I've had a few injury niggles over recent years so i'm keen to ensure I do everything I can to recover fully from those and prolong my career". This break seems like it could well and truly be overdue after the recent string of leg injuries that have occurred. It is these type of injuries that Dan is clearly trying to decrease the frequency of and give his body the best possible chance to continue playing at the top level for the next 2 years.
With this recent calf injury DC is expected to be out for the next 3-4 weeks giving Aaron Cruden the understudy a chance to extend his push for the 10 jersey fulltime. After another impressive Super Rugby season the previous levels of panic that surround a "DC" injury seems to be decreasing with Aaron more than qualified to take up the position.
After leading the Chiefs to another Super Rugby title, Cruden has proven that he is ready to step into DC's shoes and progress towards the 10 jersey on a full time basis. There is still a couple of area's of Aaron's game that need improving but that will come with more of an opportunity in the black jersey.
Saturday isn't coming around fast enough for my liking.
Team naming Thursday will be up shortly.
All Black everything.
